Less Cramps, More Calm: Say Goodbye to Heavy Periods with Ayurveda

Menorrhagia is nothing but excessive bleeding during menstruation. In Ayurveda terminologies, this condition is known as Rakta Pradara.

It is found that due to hormonal imbalance in the body of the patient, excessive bleeding takes place during the period. As per Ayurveda, the aggravation of Pitta is to be blamed for this disease. Cancer in the uterus can also be one of the reasons for this condition.

Unveiling the Causes of Heavy Periods: Demystifying Menorrhagia

The most common factors held responsible for such excessive bleeding are increased consumption of various food sources like:

  • Sour and salty food
  • Pungent, heavy, and fermented food items
  • The meat of domestic animals
  • Alcoholic beverages

In addition, there are certain health conditions related to the occurrence of menorrhagia. These conditions include:

  • Repeated abortions
  • Excessive or pressurized sexual activity
  • Overexertion
  • Excessive grief, depression, and anxiety
  • Emaciation
  • Oversleeping during daytime

Herbal Remedies and Lifestyle Practices: An Ayurvedic Approach to Menorrhagia Management

Ashoka is the herb of choice to treat this condition. Lodhra is another herb of choice in Ayurveda to treat this condition. The powder of the bark of these two herbs is administered to the patient either separately or in a compound form. This can be given four times a day with a dose of one teaspoonful.

Ashokarista and Lodhrasava are two popular medicines in Ayurveda that are advised to patients at a dose of 30 ml twice daily after food with water.

Tender leaves of pomegranate trees are also helpful in this condition. Seven tender leaves and seven grains of rice are mixed to prepare a paste and given to the patient twice daily for a month.

Pravala(coral) and Mukta(pearl) are used in the acute condition of this disease. The powder form of this medicine, commonly known as pishti, is given to the patient at a dose of 100 mg four times a day.

When it comes to the line of Ayurvedic treatment, the diet that falls under the category of kashaya rasa is considered to be the best option. Kashaya rasa is one of the six tastes defined in a healthy diet as per the Ayurvedic texts. All the foods falling under this category work as astringents and are known to be most beneficial for bleeding disorders.

This also works to increase the amount of rakta dhatu or blood in the body and avoid any weakness associated with excessive bleeding. Some of the essential herbs of kashaya rasa, also working as remedies for heavy periods, include Pathya, Padma, bias, Utpala, Gairika, Anjana, Aksha, Muktaa, Madhu, and Kharjura.

Furthermore, there are other Ayurvedic therapies like Panchakarma detoxification and herbal purgation, known as Virechan therapies, for the treatment of menorrhagia. These therapies work to remove all the toxins from the body and clean the srotas or channels that are responsible for the optimal functioning of the human body. These also work to release stress imposed on various altering hormones so that the body and mind stay calm and in harmony.

Then there are herbs like Shatavari, Asoka, Giloy, and mulethi, which are considered ayurvedic Amrit ?? because of the various benefits they provide for menstrual disorders along with other serious diseases. The main function of these herbs is to balance the tridoshas in the body, and this works as a significant cure for a perfectly healthy body.

Yoga postures like vajrasana and sirasana are also very beneficial for handling menstruation issues. They work to ease the menstrual pain and comfort the muscles present in the pelvic region while altering the flow of blood.
